Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, has recently announced a significant change to the labeling of social media posts suspected to have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The previous label, 'Made with AI,' will now be replaced with 'AI Info' to better align with people's expectations and provide more context about the content. This update comes in response to complaints from photographers who expressed concerns about the incorrect application of the 'Made with AI' tag on their pictures.
Photographers were among the first to raise objections to the previous labeling system.
Notably, former White House photographer Pete Souza highlighted instances where non-AI-generated photos were incorrectly tagged with the 'Made with AI' label.
Meta acknowledged the need to strike a balance between the rapid advancement of AI technology and its responsibility to ensure accurate and transparent labeling of content.
“As we’ve said from the beginning, we’re consistently improving our AI products, and we are working closely with our industry partners on our approach to AI labeling,” said Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin.
The Implementation of The New Label
The implementation of the new label will be carried out in phases, starting with mobile apps and subsequently expanding to the web view. The tag, 'AI Info,' will offer users a more detailed explanation when clicked, similar to the previous label.
This aims to clarify that the content may have been modified using AI tools rather than entirely generated by AI.
Meta plans to leverage metadata tagging technology such as the Content Authenticity Initiative's C2PA framework to mark the difference between AI-generated and real-life images.
